 Intro to Patchwork--urban amish

Monday June 4 & 11 @ 6:30p to 8:30p -- 3 spots

Sunday July 8 & 15 @ noon to 2p -- FULL

Cost: $100 + supplies

Teacher: Colette Cogley

If you're new to patchwork--this class is for you.  We designed the Urban Amish for beginners.  It’s the perfect learning project because the seams don’t have to match up!  The idea is to cut different size strips from lots of fun prints—and then piece it all together in a scrappy collage.

This class is divided into two sessions (with a little homework in between) so that you can finish a small throw size patchwork top in two weeks!

Week 1 -- First you'll learn how to rotary cut your fabric using the mat and ruler system.  Then we'll show you how to "chain stitch"--a really neat trick for piecing patchwork efficiently.  We'll share tips for sewing quarter inch seams and give you time to practice in class.

Between the first and second classes, you'll finish sewing your strip sets at home.  Expect to spend three to four hours on this homework.

Week 2 -- We'll begin this class by cutting the strip sets into blocks and then you'll use our design walls to lay them out.   Finally, you'll use the rest of the class time to piece the blocks into rows and sew your rows together to form your top!

NOTE:  Most students use our Urban Amish pattern in this class--but you could also make a baby Boogie Woogie--or if you're a confident beginner or repeat student--you could work on the larger Lincoln Park Patchwork project.

Supply list:

  • Urban Amish, Boogie Woogie or Lincoln Park Patchwork pattern (included in class fee)
  • 12 fat quarters (48" x 60" throw) for Urban Amish throw or yardage as per other patterns
  • 100% cotton thread
  • rotary cutter (you can use the mats and rulers in the shop)
  • pins, seam ripper, scissors and/or thread snips
  • Sewing Machine with a quarter inch foot***

***If you need to borrow one of our sewing machines for use in class--please let us know when you register!  We know it can be difficult to lug a sewing machine on the bus or el, so we're happy to help out.  Just remember--you will need access to a machine outside of class in order to do the homework between weeks one and two!

Students must be at least 18 years old to attend the patchwork and quilting classes!
