Basic Sewing Kit...

If you're going to sew or quilt, you're going to need a few essential tools. Here's the rundown for a good basic sewing kit:

  • Scissors or thread snips (you'll want good dressmakers shears for cutting out fabric)
  • Rotary cutter (for quilting and binding classes)
  • Seam ripper
  • Straight pins and pin cushion
  • Thread (matching for topstitching and neutral for seam construction)
  • Sewing needles for finishing work

Sewtology101--Sewing Machine Basics

Supplies are included in this class but you might want to bring paper and pen for taking notes.

Sewtology102--Beginning Sewing

In this class we'll use the book "Bend the Rules" by Amy Karol (included in class fee.) You'll be making a simple tote bag pattern. We'll provide the pattern but you'll need to purchase fabric prior to the class.

  • Sewing kit
  • 3/4 yard of fabric for exterior
  • 3/4 yard of coordinating fabric for interior/lining
  • 3/4 yard fusible lightweight interfacing
  • thread to match for topstitching
  • marking pen

Sewtology102--Lounge Pants

The pattern for the lounge pants is in Amy Butler’s “In Stitches” book so you’ll need to have a copy—either bring in your own book or you can purchase this from us.

Fabric requirements:

  • 2.75 yards cotton fabric (needs to be prewashed!)
  • 1/8 yard fusible interfacing (light or medium weight)
  • Coordinating thread
  • *** 2.5 yards decorative trim (optional)

NOTE: Prewashing is mandatory for garment sewers—cotton does shrink and you want to make sure you’ve pre-shrunk your fabric prior to fitting the garment to your size.

Sewing notions:

  • Fabric scissors
  • Pins/pin cushion
  • Tape measure
  • Seam gauge
  • Fabric marking pen or tailor’s chalk

Items for drafting pattern:

  • Pencil
  • Scotch tape
  • Freezer paper
  • Yard stick or 24” ruler

Note: We do have some rulers and mats in our workshop space to be used on a shared basis. If you have your own—please bring them so you don’t have to wait.

Sewtology103--Swing Bag

  • 5/8 yard of fabric for the exterior
  • 5/8 yard of fabric for the interior
  • 5/8 yard of cotton canvas or fusible interfacing

Notions:
