Basic Sewing Kit...

If you're going to sew or quilt, you're going to need a few essential tools.  Here's the rundown for a good basic sewing kit:

  • Scissors or thread snips (you'll want good dressmakers shears for cutting out fabric)
  • Rotary cutter (for quilting and binding classes)
  • Seam ripper
  • Straight pins and pin cushion
  • Thread (matching for topstitching and neutral for seam construction)
  • Sewing needles for finishing work
  • Cutting mats and rulers are available in the workshop on a share basis.  If you have your own--please bring them so you don't have to wait.

Q101 Intro to Patchwork

  • Pattern (available in the shop) select from Quiltology's new Urban Amish, Jester's Court or the strip pieced Sunshine & Shadow (from the book Traditions with a Twist.)
  • Fabric (requirements depend on the pattern you select)
  • Rotary cutter, scissors, seam ripper and straight pins
  • cotton thread (quilters use a neutral for piecing tops)

Sample quilts of each of the patterns are on display in the shop.  Please stop by and select the pattern for the quilt you'd like to make before the first class.  We will start with rotary cutting on the first night and you'll need to have your fabrics and rotary cutter to begin.

Q102 Paper Piecing Project Class

This class will introduce you to paper piecing. You may choose from three simple 6-inch blocks or bring your own pattern as basic construction techniques are applicable for all foundation pieced projects.
  • Selected block or pattern. Please have 4 to 8 photocopies of the pattern sections for use in class.
  • 12-inch Add-a-Quarter ruler
  • Postcard size piece of card stock or very thin 6-inch plastic ruler
  • Rotary cutter
  • Thread: can be neutral or matching
  • Fabrics for each block. Depending on design layout for the blocks, fat quarters and scraps will work. The ideal for the three block designs is to have one fabric for each section of the block. If you want a scrappy look, add three to five more fabrics.
  • Scissors for cutting both fabric and paper
  • Pins
  • Pencil
  • Basic sewing kit

NOTE:  This is a perfect opportunity to share your scraps with others--so bring some scraps to barter!  We'll also have scrap bags available for purchase in the shop.

Q103 Intro to Machine Quilting

  • Book (included in class fee)
  • Thread (to contrast with muslin)
  • Fabric marker
  • #2 or #3 safety pins
  • Machine Quilting Gloves (optional)
  • Paper and pen for taking notes

We'll provide muslin sandwiches for practice.  If you'd like to work on your own quilt top--you'll also need bat and backing fabrics.

Binding Workshop

  • Quilt to bind
  • Binding fabric (yardage depends on the size of your quilt but you can figure the amount based on cutting 2.25" strips.)
  • Thread to match binding fabric
  • Rotary cutter, scissors, seam ripper and straight pins
  • Hand sewing needle (thimble optional)

Stack-n-Whack Quilt

  • Magic of Stack-n-Whack book by Bethany Reynolds (available in the shop)
  • Rotary cutter with NEW blade
  • Ruler
  • Flower head pins
  • Cotton thread
  • Scissors and seam ripper
  • Fabric (yardage to be determined by the size of your large scale print's repeat.

This technique works best with large scale repeats that pop lots of color.  Page 52 in the book provides yardage for various size blocks and quilts.  Teacher Jan Aaron will be available before the first night of class to help you select appropriate fabrics and yardage.
