In this class 2-hour class you’ll learn the basics of machine quilting with a walking foot. Susan will explain how to prepare your quilt sandwich by layering the top, batting and backing fabrics. She'll also share tips and tricks for marking the top and creating stitching guidelines to follow. Finally, you'll practice on “muslin sandwiches” using simple grid patterns as surface design.
NOTE: This class is designed for quilting newbies so you don’t have to have any previous experience with machine quilting—but you do need to know how to use a sewing machine.
You’ll work on the Singer Confidence Quilter machines in the shop so you don’t have to bring your machine to this class.
SUPPLIES:
- · Dark thread (to contrast with the muslin)
- · Thread snips and/or scissors
- · Fabric marker (available in the shop)
- · #2 or #3 safety pins (available in the shop)
- · Machine quilting gloves (optional)
- · Paper and pen for taking notes

Susan will show you how to draw with a needle and thread. You begin with simple curved lines and then move into meandering and stippling methods. You’ll learn about hand-eye coordination, body position and how to avoid wrist fatigue. At the end of this class you will have a free motion sampler you can take home for future reference along with Don Linn’s book which includes 50+ free motion patterns.
NOTE: This class is for students who have some machine quilting experience or have taken Susan's first session on machine quilting basics.
SUPPLIES -- same as above.
You’re welcome to use our Singer Confidence sewing machines in class—but if you prefer to use your own machine—you’ll need to have a darning foot for free motion work.
